The project is aimed at providing technical, practical and theoretical support at the postgraduate level to those surgeons willing to improve their skills in the procedure

Despite the growing trend in the utilization of the One anastomosis gastric bypass /Mini gastric bypass (OAGB/MGB), it is interesting to observe that many bariatric surgeons still have a misperception about this procedure. The confusion some authors make between OAGB/MGB and the old Mason’s loop bypass, or the hypothetical resemblance it has with the Billroth II technique, has led part of the International bariatric community, especially in the North America Chapter of the IFSO, to express deep concern about its utilisation.

However, OAGB/MGB remains widely accepted by surgeons working in the remaining chapters of the IFSO i.e. Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Asia Pacific, and more recently, Latin America. Eventually, a consensus paper stating the final acknowledgement of OAGB/MGB was released last year by IFSO and in July 2019 a worldwide consensus conference held in Hamburg, Germany, finally confirmed the safety and the efficacy of this procedure.

Nevertheless, even though OAGB/MGB is often presented as a safe and effective surgery offering several advantages to both patients and surgeons, some passages, such as the tailoring of a long and narrow gastric pouch, remain of outstanding importance. Failing to observe these simple but essential technical details may turn this surgery into an endless sequence of short, mid, and long-term complications.

On this note, a group of experts within this procedure has decided to offer an interesting educational project named OAGB/MGB Euro Masterclass. The project is aimed at providing technical, practical and theoretical support at the postgraduate level to those surgeons willing to improve their skills in the procedure.

Accordingly, a number of meetings have been scheduled starting from Fall 2019 up to Summer 2020 in Portugal, Italy and Israel. During this period, a number of teachers and experts coming from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel, UK, France and USA will meet five different groups of attendees. Information is available here and here

Registrations for this first edition have sold out. However, a second edition of the OAGB/MGB Euro Masterclass involving a larger number of European countries not included in this first round is already on schedule.

Stay tuned with OAGB/MGB Euro Masterclass!
