Issue 55 of Bariatric News is now available to read and/or download. In this issue, we report on the latest outcomes from the By-Band-Sleeve trial that advised patients electing to have bariatric and metabolic surgery are should have a bypass, with sleeve as a secondary option when bypass is not possible.

We also highlight an International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) consensus paper on the role of obesity management medications before and after metabolic bariatric surgery, as well as second consensus paper from the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), the International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders European Chapter (IFSO-EC) and the European Collation for People Living with Obesity (ECPO) that concluded only approved centres should be carrying bariatric tourism.

We report that an international consensus panel of 68 leading bariatric and metabolic surgeons concluded that there are numerous potential roles of artificial intelligence (AI) in BMS however, certain concerns and ethical considerations must be addressed. The panel said AI could improve education and training, decision-making and planning, cost management and supportive systems, prediction of outcomes and patient follow-ups.

We highlight a paper that found that semaglutide before bariatric surgery does not improve weight loss or safety, suggesting a ’surgery-first strategy’ could lead to better outcomes. An additional paper, has concluded that gastric pouch resizing for recurrent weight gain can promote weight stabilisation in well-selected patients.

In our technology review, an inflatable gastric balloon with controller could help people lose weight, OMP reveals additional three-month data for its Sirona dual-polymer hydrogel pill and the latest on the biofragmentable magnetic anastomosis system (BMAS). We also report that a Global Commission has proposed major overhaul of obesity diagnosis, going beyond BMI to define when obesity is a disease.
