The International Obesity Society (IOS) was officially launched during the Sixth IBC Oxford World Congress, held from September 8-10, 2025, at the University of Oxford. This landmark announcement marks a significant step forward in the global fight against obesity.

The founding Director of IOS, Dr Wah Yang, announced the Society's establishment during his invited lecture in the plenary hall. He presented the IOS's vision to create a collaborative global ecosystem promoting research excellence and integrated patient care in obesity management. The IOS is a newly established global organisation dedicated to creating a collaborative research ecosystem, promoting excellence in integrated patient care, and defining the future of obesity treatment through innovation and education, thereby improving outcomes for people living with obesity worldwide.
The IBC Oxford World Congress, which integrated bariatric and metabolic surgery, endoscopy, medicine and allied health, provided the perfect backdrop for this initiative, gathering experts from over 100 countries.

The IOS also successfully convened two dedicated symposia during the Congress, fostering discussions on cutting-edge topics like Metabolic Surgery 2.0 and the impact of obesity on cancer risk. The presence of numerous colleagues from China and other countries underscored the Society's commitment to inclusive, worldwide collaboration.
